Areej Burgonio of the women’s basketball team and Mohammad Reza Nafar of the men’s soccer team have been named the Subway-Concordia Stingers athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 17.
Burgonio a third-year guard, played a key role in two impressive preseason victories last week. Head coach Tenicha Gittens says she was a game-changer.
Last Friday, the Stingers defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 88-54, and Burgonio had four points and three assists in 19 minutes of play. Two days later she played 30 minutes picking up six points in an 88-56 victory over the York Lions.
A 21-year-old resident of Toronto, Burgonio is studying Sociology at Concordia.
Nafar, a midfielder, was instrumental in helping his team put together two strong performances last week. He was named player of the game in a tough 1-0 loss to the No. 6-ranked UQTR Patriotes last Friday. A couple of days later he scored a goal and added an assist in a 2-1 win over the UQAM Citadins.
He is the leading scoring on the Stingers with four goals and two assist for six points in nine games.
The 25-year-old student from Montreal is studying Supply Chain Management in the John Molson School of Business.
