Football Stingers firing on all cylinders in win over McGill

Quarterback Olivier Roy led the Stingers to a dominating 31-3 victory over the McGill Redbirds before a boisterous sold out crowd at Concordia Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The win clinched a playoff spot and third place in the RSEQ standings.

A third-year pivot from Donnacona, Que., Roycompleted 22 of 36 passes for 346 yards and two touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. He also carried the ball five times for 28 yards.

He continues to lead the conference in passing yards (2251), touchdowns (17), attempts (237) and completions (147).

Roy becomes the seventh Concordia quarterback to surpass 2,000 yards passing in a season. He is third on the all-time list with 2251 yards, behind Trenton Miller (2384 yards) in 2015 and Rob Mackay (2739 yards) in 2009. He has one game left to play in the regular season.

Overall, Roy commanded a highly efficient unit that rolled up 26 first downs and 402 yards of offence.

The star pivot found receiver Jacob Salvail for a seven-yard touchdown eight minutes into the game, and the Stingers never looked back. Early in the second quarter Salvail struck again; this time he ran it in four yards on a fake field goal attempt. He has seven majors this season. 

Versatile backup quarterback Adrien Guay entered the game with less than a minute in the first half and he ran one yard to score Concordia's third touchdown of the half. After 30 minutes, the Stingers had a 21-3 lead.

The remainder of the points all came in the third quarter. Andrew Stevens connected for a 14-yard field, followed by a spectacular Jaylan Greaves touchdown on a 77-yard pass-and-run play. Greaves, a rookie receiver, has five TDs this season.

The Concordia defence also had an outstanding day.Second-year linebacker Zach Philion led the Stingers with eight solo tackles, including a sack for a loss of 10 yards.He was a leader on a defence that held its opponent to 12 first downs and 224 yards of total offence.

"Talking with our coaches after the game, it's the first time this season that we felt we dominated on all three phases of the game," said head coach Brad Collinson. "It really was a collective win."

The Stingers will travel to Sherbrooke to face the Vert & Or on Saturday. Kickoff is 1 p.m. and the game will be televised by TVA Sports.
