The Concordia Stingers men's rugby team steamrolled the McGill Redbirds 33-0 to win a fourth consecutive RSEQ championship before a sold-out crowd of 1,463 at Molson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The win gives the Stingers a berth in the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship being held Nov. 24-28 at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont. It will be the fourth straight time Concordia has earned a place at the national championship.
It is the 11th Quebec conference title for the team since the RSEQ started keeping men’s rugby records in 1989.
It was a highly-anticipated match as the teams have a long-standing, intense rivalry and were evenly matched during the season. Both posted 5-1 win-loss records, but McGill edged ahead in the standings with one extra bonus point.
In their only meeting in the regular season, the Stingers eked out a 14-6 victory. However, the final was not close.
The Stingers quickly established their superiority with three first-half tries, two from Jean-Christophe Vinette and one from Dylan MacDonald.
In the second frame, Concordia added two more scores; this time from Mohamed Al Moallim and Stan Blazkowski. Arthur Du Chaffaut made four of the five converts.
