Stinger receiver Jaylan Greaves named top rookie in RSEQ football

Concordia Stinger inside receiver Jaylan Greaves was named the outstanding rookie in the RSEQ football conference this morning in Montreal.

Greaves goes forward as the Quebec nominee for the U SPORTS Peter Gorman Trophy awarded annually to the top rookie in Canadian university football.

It’s no surprise the electrifying receiver, a Montrealer who checks in at six-feet-two and 170 pounds, has been named the RSEQ Rookie of the Year. The all-star closed out the 2021 regular season with very impressive receiving numbers. He caught 27 passes for 605 yards and five touchdowns in eight games.

He was third in the conference for total receiving yards, second in touchdowns, first in average yards per catch at 22.4 and he had the longest play of the season with a 77-yard catch for a TD on Oct. 23 in a 31-3 victory over the McGill Redbirds.

“Jaylan is competitive. That’s the biggest thing when describing him,” said Concordia head coach Brad Collinson. “His accomplishments in his first year of university football are remarkable. Every game he made a big play. He had a lot of clutch plays when we needed them and he was consistent all season long.”

Greaves comes out of the Châteauguay Raiders football program. He started playing tyke football when he was four years old and wrapped up his career with the organization in 2019 with the junior program. His last year he was a Quebec Junior Football League all-star at receiver, but played both ways and stood out at defensive back as well.

“We had heard about Jaylan and his athletic ability,” Collinson said. “We knew he was raw but had a high ceiling. He brought his work ethic with him to Concordia and the rest is history.”

Greaves adds his name to a long list of accomplished Concordia football players who have earned conference rookie honours:
