Stinger receiver Jaylan Greaves named U SPORTS Rookie of the Year

For the second season in a row, a Concordia Stinger slotback has been awarded the Peter Gorman Trophy as the outstanding rookie in Canadian university football. Jaylan Greaves accepted the honour at the U SPORTS Vanier Cup gala on Thursday night in Quebec City.

Earlier in the evening, the electrifying receiver was also named a U SPORTS first team all-Canadian.

A Montrealer who checks in at six-feet-two and 170 pounds, Greaves closed out the 2021 RSEQ regular season with remarkable receiving numbers. He caught 27 passes for 605 yards and five touchdowns in eight games.

He was third in the Quebec conference for total receiving yards, second in touchdowns, first in average yards per catch at 22.4 and he had the longest play of the season with a 77-yard catch for a TD on Oct. 23 in a 31-3 victory over the McGill Redbirds.

"I was successful because I bought into the system here at Concordia," said Greaves after the ceremony. "It wasn't just me, but all my teammates. We trusted each other and our coaches."

“Jaylan is competitive. That’s the biggest thing when describing him,” said Concordia head coach Brad Collinson. “His accomplishments in his first year of university football are exceptional. Every game he made a big play. He had a lot of clutch plays when we needed them and he was consistent all season long.”

Greaves comes out of the Châteauguay Raiders football program. He started playing tyke football when he was four years old and wrapped up his career with the organization in 2019 with the junior program. In his last year, he was a Quebec Junior Football League all-star at receiver.

Greaves is the third Concordia football player to earn the Peter Gorman Trophy. Receiver Jeremy Murphy was the outstanding rookie in 2019. Quarterback Liam Mahoney took home the award in 2007.
