With a lopsided 58-30 win over the McGill Redmen in the Shaughnessy Cup game at Molson Stadium on Saturday afternoon the Concordia Stingers have clinched a Quebec conference playoff spot.
With one game remaining, the Stingers have a 5-2 win-loss record and can finish no lower than third place in the six-team conference. The first-place Laval Rouge et Or host the Bishop’s Gaiters tomorrow and then travel to Montreal to meet the Stingers on Saturday, Oct. 27. These two games will determine the final top three spots in the conference.
Concordia quarterback Liam Mahoney, a rookie in just his third start, masterminded an offence that rolled up 644 yards of offence and 58 points.
It’s the first time in the history of the Concordia-McGill series that the Stingers have scored 58 points. Their previous high was 46 points versus the Redmen – a 46-1 victory on Sept. 27, 2003.
Mahoney completed 12 of 16 passes for 262 yards and four touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. His favorite target was second-year wide receiver Cory Watson who caught five passes for 158 yards and two majors.
“We needed that,” said Watson on the field after the victory. “Our offence has struggled off and on the last few weeks. It was time to get it rolling and to get ready for the playoffs.”
The Stingers also banged out 404 yards on the ground.
Defensively, linebacker Cory Greenwood was outstanding. He had six solo tackles, two assists, two pass breakups and two fumble recoveries.
