Areej Burgonio of the women's basketball team and Alec Phaneuf of the men's basketball team have been named the Concordia Stingers athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 19, 2023.
Burgonio, a veteran guard, scored 30 points to lead the Stingers to a pivotal 75-58 victory over the McGill Martlets on Saturday. She also had seven rebounds and seven assists. The win clinched a playoff spot for the Stingers and eliminated the Martlets.
A 22-year-old from Toronto, Burgonio is studying Sociology at Concordia.
Phaneuf, a second-year guard, was instrumental in helping the Concordia earn an 83-79 win over the McGill Redbirds on Saturday. He had 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds. The win moved the Stingers two points ahead of the Redbirds in the standings and keeps them in playoff contention.
The 22-year-old student-athlete from Gatineau, Que. is enrolled in the university’s Sociology program.
