The Concordia women's basketball team faces a tough opponent in the Bishop's Gaiters, the No. 4 ranked team in U Sports, in a semifinal meeting Thursday at 7 p.m.
But you can never count out a team coached by Tenicha Gittens, who has her Stingers peaking at just the right time.
Concordia won its last three games to secure the final RSEQ conference playoff spot and eliminate the McGill Martlets from post-season play. The Stingers finished in fourth place with a 5-11 win-loss record.
Bishop’s wrapped up the regular season in first place with a 14-2 record. But the last two meetings with Concordia have been tight, and the Stingers handed the Gaiters’ one of their two losses on Jan. 21 when they defeated them 71-68 in Lennoxville, Que. Veteran guard Areej Burgonio score 32 points and added eight assists to lead her team to victory.
Burgonio, who was the second leading scorer in the RSEQ with an average of 18.8 points a game, will be one of the keys on Thursday night. Bishop’s will counter with Amaiquen Siciliano, also a senior guard. With 22.5 points a game, she leads the conference in scoring.
The UQAM Citadins and the Laval Rouge et Or are playing in the other conference semifinal on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Quebec City. The winners of the two semifinals games will meet in the Quebec conference championship on Saturday.
