Okpro leads Concordia grid all-stars

For the third straight year defensive halfback Sammy Okpro was a unanimous choice on the Quebec University Football League all-star team announced last week.

The two-time CIS all-Canadian played seven games this season, racking up 30 solo tackles, 13 assists, one interception and three pass breakups.

“Sammy is the best football player on our team,” says Stingers head coach Gerry McGrath. “He’s tough. He’s tenacious. His anticipation of what is going to happen next on the field is uncanny. He has a great understanding of the game and serves as a coach on the field.

“It’s a privilege to have him as a member of the Concordia Stingers.”

The Pierrefonds, Que. resident is in his fourth year at Concordia where he studies Human Relations.

Joining Okpro on the all-star team are veteran offensive tackle Keith Dauper, second-year linebacker Cory Greenwood and rookie kicker Rene Paredes.

Dauper, a native of Dublin, Ohio, earns his third all-star honor. He was also a second team all-Canadian in 2006.

Greenwood from Kingston, Ont., makes his first appearance on the elite team. He was the leading tackler on the Stingers with 41 solo tackles and 20 assists.

Paredes, who was born in Venezuela but now calls Montreal home, led the nation in field goal percentage. He was good on 15 of 17 attempts for an 88.2 success rate. He was also a perfect 19 of 19 on converts.
