Six members of the Concordia Stingers 2005 football team have been named CIS all-Canadians and will be honored at a Vanier Cup awards gala in Hamilton on Thursday night.
Three Stingers made the first team defensive honor roll. Linebacker Patrick Donovan of Laconia, N.H., cornerback Moe Sidibe (Buffalo, N.Y.) and halfback Sammy Okpro (Pierrefonds, Que.) are the standouts.
Donovan is also a finalist for the President's Trophy presented annually to the outstanding defensive player in Canadian university football.
Quarterback Scott Syvret (Kirkland, Que.) was named a second team CIS all-Canadian. He is a finalist for the Hec Crighton Trophy awarded annually to the outstanding football player in the CIS.
Both Stinger kickers were also first team all-Canadians. Punter Mike Renaud (Ottawa) earns his second consecutive all-Canadian honor and place-kicker Warren Kean (Dundas, Ont.) makes his first appearance on the national honor roll.
Six all-Canadians is a record for Concordia football. The previous best is three all-Canadians in a season.
All six all-Canadians have eligibility left and could return for the 2006 season. Sidibe and Donovan may have opportunities to pursue CFL careers.
