Stingers head to East West Bowl

Three student-athletes from the Concordia Stingers football program have been invited to participate in the sixth annual East West Bowl taking place in Hamilton on May 10.

Wide receiver Cory Watson, running back Cedric Ferdinand and linebacker Cory Greenwood will represent Concordia at the showcase that is designed to highlight Canadian university players who are eligible for the 2009 Canadian Football League draft.

The East squad is comprised of players representing institutions from the Atlantic and Quebec conferences in addition to Ottawa, Queen's, York and Toronto. Steve Sumarah, head coach of the Saint Mary’s Huskies, will direct the East Team. Concordia head coach Gerry McGrath will assist with the offence while Stingers’ defensive co-ordinator Warren Craney will help with the defence.

The West squad is made up of players from universities west of Toronto.

The Concordia players heading to Hamilton are a very accomplished group.

Watson, a six-foot-two, 195-pound native of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., is heading into his third season with the Stingers. He was Concordia’s leading receiver in 2007 with 24 catches for 366 yards and five touchdowns.

Ferdinand, a native of Ottawa with roots in Dollard des Ormeaux, stepped up in his third season. He had 90 carries for 518 yards and one TD. He averaged 5.8 yards a carry. He checks in at five foot eight inches and 200 pounds.

Greenwood, who has two seasons under his belt, is a dominant force in the Quebec conference. He was a league all-star in 2007. He led the Stingers in tackles with 41 solos and 20 assists for a total of 51. The six-foot-two, 230-pound star is a native of Kingston, Ont.

The players will report to camp on May 5 for several days of testing and practice.

McMaster University is hosting the event for the first time, taking over from Laval (2006, 2007) and Wilfrid Laurier (2003, 2004, 2005). A year ago in Quebec City, the West team claimed its fifth win in as many tries, prevailing 22-19 in overtime in front of 8,058 fans at PEPS Stadium.
