Quarterback Liam Mahoney, the 2007 CIS Rookie of the Year, picked up where he left off last season by orchestrating an impressive Concordia Stingers victory. He led his team to a 30-15 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters before 4084 fans at Concordia Stadium in Montreal.
Mahoney led all rushers in the game with 13 carries for 123 yards and one touchdown – a 14-yard run late in the first quarter. He also completed nine of 16 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown – a 28-yard strike to Tony Testa in the second quarter.
Concordia’s only other major came five minutes into the game when defensive end William Miller picked up a loose ball fumbled by Bishop’s running back Jamall Lee. Miller took it back 39 yards for the score.
Overall Mahoney and the Stingers rolled up 20 first downs and 355 yards of total offence.
Pivot Jesse Andrews and the Gaiters had 24 first downs and 390 yards. Lee collected the opening score of the game with a two-yard run for a TD at 3:40 in the first quarter. He carried the ball 14 times for 56 yards on the night.
Andrews put up good numbers, completing 20 of 34 passes for 333 yards. He threw two interceptions and one touchdown. His favorite target was Keith Godding who caught seven balls for 133 yards and the major which came at 15:00 of the first quarter.
Next week the Stingers (1-0) cross the city to play the McGill Redmen on Friday at 7 p.m.
