Devon Mitchell Jr. rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Concordia Stingers to a dramatic 46-41 come-from-behind victory over the McGill Redmen in the annual Shaughnessy Cup game at Molson Stadium on Friday night.
The six-foot-two, 230-pound native of Clarkston, Mich. came up with his biggest run in the dying seconds of the game. He charged 12 yards into the end zone to give Concordia the winning score with just 13 seconds left to play.
His 172 yards (on 22 carries) helped the Stingers roll up 559 yards of offence on the night. Quarterback Liam Mahoney also proved to be dangerous, carrying the ball 15 times for 99 yards and two majors. The second-year man from Lachine, Que. completed 15 of 25 passes for 233 yards and a TD.
Stinger receiver Corey Greenaway was also good for a touchdown which came on a six-yard pass from Mahoney in the first quarter.
Kicker Rene Paredes rounded out the scoring with three field goals and five converts.
The Shaughnessy Cup, which is symbolic of university football supremacy in Montreal, stays at Concordia for the sixth straight year.
The Stingers (2-0) now turn their attention to the Laval Rouge et Or (2-0) who come to town for Homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 20. Game time is 1 p.m. at Concordia Stadium. The game will also be the 22nd annual Shrine Bowl.
