Concordia-Laval grid showdown to benefit hospital

The No. 7-ranked Concordia Stingers will host the No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in the 22nd annual Montreal Shrine Bowl at Concordia Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The event, which will be televised by RDS, is expected to attract the biggest Stinger crowd of the season.

Concordia heads into the contest with a 2-0 win-loss record, and Laval also boasts a 2-0 record. The game is pivotal as the teams meet again the following weekend in Ste. Foy, Que. The back-to-back contests will establish a clear front-runner in the Quebec conference.

While the competition on the field will be fierce, the Stingers showed their softer side on a visit to the Montreal Shriners Hospital for Children on Wednesday morning. Five Stingers, one player representing the Rouge et Or and Buzz, the popular Stinger mascot, spent time visiting the children.

Since its inception in the mid-80s, the Montreal Shrine Bowl has raised more than $630,000 for the hospital. This year organizers hope to add another $40,000 to that total.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is a one-of-a-kind international health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing specialty pediatric care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs.

The Montreal hospital is a 40-bed pediatric orthopedic centre providing comprehensive care to children at no charge. It accepts and treats patients with routine and complex orthopedic problems, utilizing the latest treatments and technology available in pediatric orthopedics.
