QB Mahoney sinks football Mounties

Quarterback Liam Mahoney rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Concordia Stingers to a 66-13 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties at Concordia stadium in Montreal on Saturday afternoon before 2181 fans.

Mahoney, who played just 40 minutes, carried the ball nine times for 60 yards and the three majors. He also completed 10 of 13 passes for 248 yards and a TD. Mahoney’s favorite target was slotback Cory Watson who caught five balls for 145 yards and a major.

With 66 points, the Stingers set a school record for most points scored in a game. The previous high came in 2007 when Concordia defeated the McGill Redmen 58-30.

Overall the Stingers’ offence rolled up 23 first downs and 475 yards.

Concordia established control of the game quickly, jumping out to a 21-0 lead after 15 minutes and a 45-8 advantage at halftime.

Receiver Gary Ross was a bright spot for the Mounties. He caught five passes for 83 yards and Mount Allison’s lone major. Pivot Kelly Hughes completed 16 of 32 passes for 247 yards, one TD and one interception. Overall the Mounties had 16 first downs and 338 yards of offence.

Next Saturday, the 4-2 Stingers travel to Lennonville, Que. to face the Bishop’s Gaiters.
