QB Mahoney runs over Vert et Or

Quarterback Liam Mahoney ran for 132 yards and a touchdown to lead the Concordia Stingers to a 17-3 victory over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or at Concordia Stadium in Montreal on Saturday afternoon.

The victory secured second place in the Quebec University Football League (QUFL) for the Stingers who finish the regular season with a 5-3 win-loss record. The Vert et Or also finish at 5-3 but fall to third place because they lost head-to-head with Concordia.

The teams will meet again next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Concordia stadium in a QUFL semifinal matchup.

With the driving rain wreaking havoc in the game, the Stingers chose to focus on the running game, rolling up 313 yards on the ground. With 132 yards on 11 carries Mahoney led all rushers in the game. Concordia running back Cedric Ferdinand picked up 115 yards on 27 carries. Sherbrooke’s top rusher was Pascal Fils with 67 yards on 20 carries.

Mahoney completed just one of eight passes for nine yards in the game. Sherbrooke pivot Jean-Philippe Shoiry completed 19 of 33 passes for 256 yards, but threw three interceptions.

The Vert et Or turned the ball over six times. Two of the turnovers lead to Concordia scores. The Stingers coughed up just one ball.

Mahoney’s touchdown was the only major on the day. The rest of the Stingers’ points came on three Rene Paredes field goals and a safety. Sherbrooke’s lone score was a William Dion field goal with 2:14 left to play.
