4 Stingers to play in football bowl game

Two-time all-star Cory Greenwood leads a group of four Stingers who have been asked to participate in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport’s seventh annual East West Bowl on Saturday, May 9 at the University of Western Ontario.

The East West Bowl showcases CIS players who are eligible for the 2010 Canadian Football League draft.

Greenwood is one Stinger the scouts will be scrutinizing closely. Several teams in the CFL and NFL have inquired about the middle linebacker from Kingston, Ont.

He was a three-time Concordia Male Athlete of the Week in 2008. Greenwood was also the QUFL’s Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts Oct. 25 versus the Sherbrooke Vert et Or. He had seven solo tackles, five assists for 9.5 total tackles, including 1.5 TFLs. He was a Quebec conference all-star in both 2007 and 2008.

Joining Greenwood at the showcase are: slotback Cory Watson (Dollard des Ormeaux, Que.), defensive end J.P. Binette (Montreal) and offensive guard Kristian Matte (St. Hubert, Que.).

Watson was the leading receiver on the Concordia Stingers in 2007 and 2008. He is a “nightmare to defend,” says Concordia defensive co-ordinator Warren Craney. He’s an intense competitor, he’s impossible to bring down and very tough to get off a block. He’s a game-breaker.

Binette is a solid end who will be prominent in the 2009 season. His strengths are the pass rush, his aggressiveness and his work ethic. He is well-respected for his long snapping. Many consider him the best long snap in Quebec. He has already received some interest from CFL scouts for his skills.

Matte is a versatile big man. He’s very athletic for a 300-pound lineman. He was clocked at 5.2 electric at Concordia’s 2007 training camp. He’s a strong, punishing blocker. He’s a fierce competitor who puts a lot of time into improving his game. He’s football smart, picking up new plays and concepts quickly.

The East side is comprised of student-athletes representing schools from the Atlantic and Quebec conferences in addition to institutions from the Greater Toronto Area and Eastern Ontario. The West squad is made up of players from universities from the GTA, Western Ontario and the Canada West conference.

Glen Constantin, head coach of 2008 the Vanier Cup champion Laval Rouge et Or, will lead the East squad. Concordia head coach Gerry McGrath, defensive co-ordinator Warren Craney and offensive line coach Brad Collinson will also be on the coaching staff.
