2 Stingers among CFL's top prospects

Concordia Stinger linebacker Cory Greenwood and slotback Cory Watson are rated among the top talent available for the 2010 draft by the CFL’s Amateur Scouting Bureau in a report circulated Sept. 17.

Greenwood ranks third on the list. He is the first Canadian university player listed. He follows No. 1-ranked Brian Bulcke, a defensive lineman at Stanford University, and No. 2 Danny Watkins, an offensive lineman from Baylor University.

Now in his fourth-year with the Stingers, the Kingston, Ont. native is typically the leading tackler on the team and one of the top defensive players in the Quebec University Football League. He is a two-time conference all-star.

“Cory Greenwood is the type of athlete that only comes around once in awhile,” says Concordia head coach Gerry McGrath. “He has tremendous speed and size for his position. He is very athletic and very fast. He’s also a physical player. His gap responsibility isn’t A to B Gap – it’s sideline to sideline. He has great coverage skills.”

Watson is ranked 14th overall. He was the leading receiver on the Stingers in 2007 and 2008. He is expected to dominate in the tough Quebec conference in 2009. He was a three-time CEGEP AAA all-star at Vanier College and played his youth ball in the North Shore Football League in his hometown of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que.

Watson is a “nightmare to defend,” says Concordia defensive co-ordinator Warren Craney. “He’s an intense competitor, he’s impossible to bring down and very tough to get off a block. He’s a game-breaker.”

There are several draft rankings out in the press. TSN’s latest report by analyst Duane Forde has Greenwood in third spot and Watson ranked No. 4.

The CFL's Amateur Scouting Bureau is comprised of CFL scouts, player personnel directors and general managers from the league's eight teams.
