Liam Mahoney caught 13 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Concordia Stingers to a 34-22 victory over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or in the 23rd annual Shrine Bowl football game at Concordia stadium in Montreal on Saturday.

Mahoney’s performance was the second best on record for yards receiving in a single game in the 30-year history of the Quebec University Football League and its predecessor the Ontario-Quebec Intercollegiate Football Conference.

With 242 yards to his credit, he is second to Concordia’s Gerry Prud’homme, who collected 305 receiving yards in a game versus the Queen’s Golden Gaels on Sept. 20, 1980.

Mahoney opened the scoring with a 10-yard TD reception at 8:52 of the first quarter. His efforts helped the Stingers take a 17-0 lead after 15 minutes.

At 9:07 of the second quarter Mahoney found the end zone again. This time on an 82-yard play.

The native of Lachine, Que. is in his third year with the Stingers, but only moved to the slotback position this year. He suited up at quarterback in 2007 and 2008.

Overall Concordia rolled up 22 first downs and 411 yards of offence.

Quarterback Rob Mackay completed 23 of 34 passes for 350 yards and three touchdowns. He also found slotback Cory Watson for a TD strike on a 16-yard play in the first quarter.

Running back Cedric Ferdinand scored the Stingers’ final major. He ran four yards to paydirt at 7:06 of the fourth quarter. Rene Paredes kicked field goals of nine and 12 yards to round out the scoring.

Sherbrooke amassed 23 first downs and 423 yards of offence. Jean-Philippe Shoiry completed 26 of 43 passes for 287 yards and one touchdown. Running back Pascal Fils continues to impress. He carried the ball 20 times for 131 yards and a major.
