Mackay rewrites record book in grid win

Concordia Stinger quarterback Rob Mackay, a fourth-year senior from Port Dover, Ont., set several school records in a 30-25 victory over the McGill Redmen at Concordia stadium in Montreal on Saturday afternoon.

Mackay completed 31 of 44 passes for 494 yards and three touchdowns. Both the 31 completions and the 494 yards are Concordia single-game records.

On the season, Mackay has completed 167 of 281 passes for 2259 yards and a completion percentage of 59.4. With 281 passing attempts he surpasses the Concordia record of 247 set by Dominik Goulet in 1996. He also claims the record for most passing yards in a season, eclipsing Goulet once again. The latter passed for an even 2,000 yards in 1996.

The impressive numbers move Mackay into several top 10 positions in the conference record book. With 494 yards he takes the fourth spot for most passing yards in a single game. The record of 557 yards was set by McGill’s Matt Connell in 2007.

With 2259 yards on the season Mackay sits in eighth place for most passing yards in a campaign. The record is held by Connell who threw for 2533 yards in 2007. With one game remaining, Mackay needs 275 yards to set a new conference passing record.

In the victory over McGill, Mackay found a couple of sure-handed receivers in Cory Watson who caught 10 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown. Liam Mahoney led all receivers in the game with 11 catches and 117 yards.

Overall Concordia rolled up 477 yards of offence to McGill’s 340 yards.

For the Redmen rookie pivot Jonathan Collin completed 27 of 50 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite target was Charles-Antoine Sinotte who had 10 receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown. He now has 195 receptions in his career, one more than the previous CIS record set a year ago by former teammate Erik Galas.

The win gives Concordia its third straight victory after four consecutive losses at the start of the season. McGill also has a 3-4 win-loss record. With one game remaining, the playoff possibilities for both teams are still up in the air.

Next week, Mackay and the Stingers travel to Lennoxville, Que. to meet the Bishop’s Gaiters (3-4), while McGill hosts the No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or (6-1).
