Mackay, Watson set records in Stingers' loss

Concordia Stinger quarterback Rob Mackay ends the Quebec University Football League season with 2739 yards passing, 18 touchdown passes thrown and two new conference records to his credit.

The fourth-year veteran from Port Dover, Ont. completed 34 of 47 passes for 480 yards and threw four TD strikes in a tough 40-38 loss to the Bishop’s Gaiters in Lennoxville, Que. this afternoon. The big numbers bring his season totals to 201 completions in 328 attempts for 2739 yards, eclipsing the single-season yards passing mark set by McGill University’s Matt Connell who threw for 2533 yards in 2007.

Mackay has also throw 18 TD passes this season, giving him the conference record which he shares with the Laval Rouge et Or’s Benoit Groulx.

Mackay now owns all the Concordia passing records, including most touchdowns in a season. With four TDs versus the Gaiters, he surpassed the record of 16 majors thrown by Jon Bond in 2002.

Cory Watson, a fourth-year slotback from Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., is Mackay’s favorite target. He caught 11 passes for 182 yards versus Bishop’s, bringing his season totals to 52 receptions for 821 yards. Both marks are Concordia single-season receiving records.

Despite the impressive numbers, which included a total offence of 649 yards and 32 first downs, the Stingers took the loss. They finish the regular season in fourth place with a 3-5 win-loss record. Concordia will travel to Ste. Foy, Que. to face the No. 1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in semifinal action on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
