4 Stingers make football honor roll

Four members of the Concordia Stingers were named to the Quebec University Football League all-star team as selected by the conference’s six head coaches, including linebacker Cory Greenwood who was one of the few unanimous selections.

Greenwood, a senior from Kingston, Ont., led the Quebec league in tackles. In eight games he had 52 solos and 20 assists for 62 total tackles. Five of his tackles were behind the line of scrimmage.

“Cory is the type of athlete that only comes around once in awhile,” says head coach Gerry McGrath. “He has tremendous speed and size for his position. He is very athletic and very fast. He’s also a very physical player.”

This is Greenwood’s third consecutive all-star honor.

Quarterback Rob Mackay of Port Dover, Ont. makes his first appearance on the elite squad. The fourth-year senior completed 201 of 328 passes for 2739 yards and 18 touchdowns. He set Quebec records for yards passing and TDs thrown in a single season. He also demolished the Concordia record book. He now owns every single school passing record.

Slotback Cory Watson, a fourth-year veteran from Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., was also given the nod by the coaches. He had 52 receptions for 821 yards and six TDs. The reception and yard totals are Concordia single season receiving records.

The final Stinger named to the all-star team is offensive tackle Kristian Matte, a fourth-year man from St. Hubert, Que.

“Kristian has done an outstanding job blocking all of the best defensive linemen in our conference this year,” says McGrath. “He is one of the best athletes I’ve ever seen on our offensive line in my 18 years at Concordia University. He is a great combination of strength and agility. He has outstanding footwork.”
