Concordia Stinger middle linebacker Cory Greenwood was presented the Presidents Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) at an all-Canadian awards gala at the Québec City Convention Centre on Thursday night.
In eight games, Greenwood, a fourth-year Human Environment student, collected 62 total tackles to lead the QUFL in tackling. His 52 solo tackles and 20 assists rank him fourth in the CIS. He also collected two sacks and forced a fumble.
The native of Kingston, Ont. is one of hardest working athletes to ever wear the Stingers’ uniform. Greenwood is in superb physical condition and has earned a lot of respect for his devotion to training. In April 2008 he earned the title Fittest Male Athlete at Concordia. At 235 pounds, he can do an amazing 23 reps at 225 pounds on bench press. Greenwood also has an exceptional vertical leap which is now at 39 inches. He runs a sub-4.60 40-yard dash.
“Cory is the type of athlete that only comes around once in awhile,” says Concordia head coach Gerry McGrath. “He has tremendous speed and size for his position. He is very athletic and very fast. He’s also a physical player. His gap responsibility isn’t A to B Gap – it’s sideline to sideline. He has great coverage skills. He’s very good in man-to-man coverage.”
Greenwood is the 10th Stinger nomination for Presidents Trophy. The elite linebackers include: Ross Reeves (1982), CFLer Greg Miller (’85), Luc Pelland (’94), Dwayne Bromfield (’98), Jason Casey (’99), Mickey Donovan (2003 and ’04) and Patrick Donovan (’05 and ’06).
This is the fourth time in the last six years Concordia has claimed the top defensive player in the country. Mickey Donovan (2004) and Patrick Donovan (‘05 and ‘06) were the previous recipients.
This is also the Stingers’ sixth major award in the last six years with outstanding lineman Troy Cunningham (J.P. Metras Trophy 2004) and outstanding rookie Liam Mahoney (Peter Gorman Trophy 2007) rounding out the field.
