Greenwood, Watson move up CFL rankings

Two members of the Concordia Stingers football program are featured prominently on the CFL's Amateur Scouting Bureau ranking of top Canadian amateur football players eligible for the 2010 Canadian draft.

Released today, the list has linebacker Cory Greenwood in the No. 2 spot, while slotback Cory Watson is in the No. 6 position.

In eight games Greenwood, a fourth-year player from Kingston, Ont., collected 62 total tackles to lead the Quebec University Football League (QUFL). His 52 solo tackles and 20 assists rank him fourth in the CIS. He also collected two sacks and forced a fumble

Greenwood is a three-time Quebec conference all-star. Last month he was named a CIS first team all-Canadian and awarded the Presidents Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in CIS football.

Greenwood moves up into second place in the CFL Amateur Scouting Bureau ranking. In the September rankings he was third. He is the top CIS prospect for the 2010 draft.

Watson, a fourth-year man from Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., had 52 receptions for 821 yards and six TDs in eight games. He led the QUFL in both receptions and yards. At the national level, he was third in receptions and second in total yards. He set Concordia University single season receiving records with number of receptions and total receiving yards.

In November, Watson was named a CIS second team all-Canadian. He is the first Stinger receiver since Jean-François Heroux in 1991 to earn all-Canadian honors.

“He’s an intense competitor and a nightmare to defend,” says Concordia defensive co-ordinator Warren Craney. “He’s impossible to bring down and very tough to get off a block. He’s a game-breaker.”

Watson was one of the biggest movers on the CFL list. He goes from 14th place up to the sixth spot. He is the top rated receiver for the 2010 draft.
