Greenwood named MVP at Stingers football banquet

Linebacker Cory Greenwood was honored as the outstanding player on the 2009 Concordia football team when the Stingers gathered for their annual banquet last Saturday at Molson brewery.

The Kingston, Ont. native was also named the team’s MVP defence.

In eight games, Greenwood collected 62 total tackles to lead the Quebec University Football League in tackling. His 52 solo tackles and 20 assists ranked him fourth in the country. He also collected two sacks and forced a fumble.

Greenwood was awarded the Presidents Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) at an all-Canadian awards gala last November.

The fourth-year Human Environment major, who is training in New Jersey to prepare for the upcoming NFL and CFL drafts, was represented at the banquet by his parents Peter and Lana Greenwood.

Other defensive awards went to Alexandre Turp, who was named the outstanding lineman, and linebacker Alexandre Lemire who was top rookie.

Quarterback Rob Mackay was the Stingers’ MVP offence. The fourth-year senior completed 201 of 328 passes for 2739 yards and 18 touchdowns. He set Quebec records for yards passing and TDs thrown in a single season. He demolished the Concordia record book. He now owns every single school passing record.

Also on offence, guard Kristian Matte was the top lineman while Joel Belerique, also a guard, was the outstanding rookie.

Marc-André Lewis, a rookie linebacker, was recognized as the top academic on the team. He currently has a GPA of 4.13 in Economics and Business.

Third-year offensive tackle Anthony Barrette was named the most dedicated player, while fifth-year running back Cedric Ferdinand is the inaugural winner of the Ricky Zieba Memorial Award. The honor will be given out annually to an unsung hero on the team; someone who is hard working and a team player.

Defensive back Mark Deslauriers and Ferdinand were also honored for their careers. Both have completed five years with the program.
