Stingers edged 24-21 in Shrine Bowl

The Concordia Stingers lost 24-21 in the 19th annual Shrine Bowl played at Concordia Stadium in Montreal last Saturday.

The Stingers totaled 242 yards of offence -14 yards rushing and 228 in the air. Quarterback Scott Syvret completed 23 of 35 passes for 228 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Syvret's favorite target was fullback Mark Kang who caught nine passes for 90 yards. The big back also ran in a TD from three yards out. Kang was named the Concordia Shrine Bowl MVP.

Concordia's second major came on a three-yard pass from Syvret to wide receiver Blake Butler late in the game. Kicker Warren Kean was two for two on field goal attempts, including one from 40 yards out.

Montreal's Joseph Mroué ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns to lead his team. He scored mid-way through the first quarter and again with 5:13 left to play in the game to seal the Montreal victory. He was named the Montreal Shrine Bowl MVP in the game.

The Montreal Alouettes Alumni Association honors the outstanding defensive linemen in the Shrine Bowl each year. This year Montreal's Martin Gagné and Concordia's Josh MacDonald receive the Ted Elsby Awards, which are named after the former Alouettes' great.

In excess of $40,000 was raised for the Montreal Shriners Hospital through donations, ticket sales and sponsorship at the game. Since its inception more than $550,000 has been raised for the hospital.

The Stingers' win-loss record falls to 4-2, while Montreal can now boast a 5-1 record.
