Concordia Stingers middle linebacker Max Caron was named the Quebec University Football League Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in a 17-14 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters on Saturday night in Lennoxville, Que.
The Kingston, Ont. native recorded 3.5 tackles and scored the game-winning touchdown. With 4:38 remaining in the third quarter, he intercepted Bishop’s quarterback Jesse Andrews in the end zone to give the Stingers a 17-7 advantage. Concordia hung on to win the season-opener 17-14.
“Luckily I was able to get a piece of the ball,” said Caron. “There was a lot of hang time and it was a tense few seconds. Thankfully the ball came down in my hands. It was a big moment for me personally.”
Caron is in his first year with the Stingers and was playing his first university football game. He has dealt exceptionally well with the added pressure of starting in Cory Greenwood’s spot. Greenwood anchored the Stingers’ defence the last four seasons and is currently a member of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.
“I wanted to have a good start to the season,” said Caron. “I set my goals high. Getting a chance to make a play like that is pretty special.”
Caron is one of four members of the Okanagan Sun of the Canadian Junior Football League to join the Stingers this season. He played two seasons with the Sun. Previously he attended high school at Frontenac Secondary in Kingston, Ont.
Returner Jeff Thompson from the McGill Redmen was the Special Teams Player of the Week. Sherbrooke Vert et Or receiver Alexandre Poirier was the Offensive Player of the Week.
