Mahoney named MVP at Stingers football banquet

Slotback Liam Mahoney was honored as the outstanding player of the 2010 season when the Concordia Stingers gathered at their annual football banquet in Montreal on Saturday night.

A fourth-year player from Lachine, Que., Mahoney was also Concordia’s offensive MVP.

He was the leading receiver on the Stingers with 49 catches for 609 yards and six touchdowns in nine games. Mahoney also scored a rushing touchdown, bringing his total on the year to seven. He was third in the Quebec conference in receiving yards and first in touchdowns scored.

The Vanier College graduate was a Quebec University Football League all-star and a second-team all-Canadian.

The athletic receiver has caught the attention of many professional scouts. He will attend the Canadian Football League’s evaluation camp in Toronto in March. He is considered a top prospect for the CFL draft in the spring.

Also on the offensive side of the ball, tackle Anthony Barrette was named the outstanding lineman. A second team all-Canadian in 2010, the big man was unable to attend the dinner as he was in Michigan preparing for the CFL evaluation camp and draft. He is No. 13 in the latest draft rankings.

Slotback Michael Harrington was named the top rookie on offence. He caught 32 passes for 344 yards and one touchdown in nine games.

Max Caron, the first-year linebacker from the Okanagan Sun junior organization, was the MVP and top rookie on defence. He picked up 37 solo tackles, 16 assists and two sacks in nine games. He also had two fumble recoveries and an interception that he hauled in for a touchdown in his first ever university game.

Fourth-year defensive tackle Maurice Forbes was the outstanding defensive lineman. In nine games, he had 15 solo tackles and 11 assists.

Other awards went to third-year linebacker Gracia Mwembo who was named most dedicated player, linebacker Marc-André Lewis who was the top academic athlete, Nicola Tomassini was the top special teams player and Daryl Rankin who was the recipient of the Ricky Zeiba Award presented annually for heart, leadership and team work.

At the end of the evening, four fifth-year Stingers gave speeches. Defensive end Kamil Thompson-Hutchinson, defensive tackle Alexandre Turp, wide receiver Dan Rodrigues and quarterback Rob Mackay said their farewells.
