Head coach Gerry McGrath, who is now in his 12th season at the helm of the Stingers, is pleased to announce his 2011 Concordia football coaching staff.
“I’m really excited about our team,” says McGrath who will continue to serve as offensive co-ordinator and kicking coach. “This is a very talented and hard working group of coaches. I’m really looking forward to our future.”
Former Montreal Alouettes star Bryan Chiu will return as offensive line coach and assistant offensive co-ordinator, while Phil Roberts is back as the defensive co-ordinator and will continue to oversee Concordia’s recruiting.
Veteran coach Peter Regimbald will contribute to special teams and serve as assistant to the head coach.
Two new faces will be with the Stingers this year – experienced university coaches Spiro Feradouros and Sean Dougherty.
After an accomplished career coaching at Vanier College and Université de Montréal Spiro Feradouros returns to his roots. A former Concordia player who graduated with a BA in French Studies in 1996, he will co-ordinate special teams and coach the defensive backs. He will also be responsible for recruiting in Quebec.
Dougherty will take on the tutelage of Concordia’s quarterbacks. He has a long history of developing young talent beginning in 2002 at McGill University. Dougherty has been involved in coaching at Cégep de Vieux-Montréal, the University of Manitoba, Vanier College and the Lakeshore Cougars organization in addition to provincial teams in Manitoba and Nova Scotia.
On offence, Dave Spence returns as the receiver coach and Alex Oliveira will assist with the offensive line.
On the other side of the ball, Alexandre Turp will help Eric Nichiporowich coach the defensive line. Turp just wrapped up a five-year playing career at tackle with the Stingers. In the fall, he will start graduate school and join the coaching ranks.
At linebacker, former all-Canadian Luc Pelland will continue to mentor the young talent at his position.
“We have another outstanding recruiting class this year,” McGrath says. “We’ll be young, but with this coaching staff in place I love the way our future is shaping up.”
