Donovan wins national grid honor

Concordia Stinger middle linebacker Patrick Donovan of Laconia, N.H., was named the Canadian Interuniversity Sport defensive player of the week by the CIS today.

He was a dominant force on defence for the Stingers on Saturday as he tallied 11.5 tackles, including two quarterback sacks, in a convincing 49-14 win over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or.

The six-foot, 225-pound linebacker, whose brother Mickey claimed the President's Trophy as CIS defensive player of the year in 2004, led the charge as the Stingers defensive unit completely shut down the Sherbrooke offence after the first quarter. The Vert et Or scored only four points on a pair of safeties in the final 45 minutes of the game. The 24 year old ranks second in the country after three weeks of play with 27 tackles.

The No.8-ranked Stingers, showing a 3-0 win-loss record for the first time since 1999, visit the Bishop's Gaiters (0-3) on Saturday. Concordia beat Bishop's 23-11 10 days ago.
