Okpro paces Stingers to grid victory

Second-year halfback Sammy Okpro paced a strong defensive effort that gave the Concordia Stingers a 23-11 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters before 4252 Homecoming fans at Concordia Stadium in Montreal on Saturday afternoon.

Okpro, whose seven solo tackles came at key times, was named the outstanding player in the game and awarded Concordia's Homecoming Cup for his efforts. He led a defensive effort that held the Gaiters to 215 yards. Bishop's posted 219 passing yards and minus four yards rushing.

Other key contributors were linebacker Pat Donovan with 8.5 tackles and an interception and cornerback Mo Sidibe with six solo tackles.

Meanwhile Stinger quarterback Scott Syvret helped his team roll up 305 yards of offence. He completed 18 of 27 passes for 135 yards. He did not throw an interception or a touchdown. Syvret was also the leading rusher in the game. He carried the ball nine times for 41 yards and two touchdowns.

Wide receiver Dan Mott continued to put up big numbers. He caught seven passes for 109 yards, giving him 17 receptions for 259 yards in two games this season.

Concordia had a 23-0 lead at the half. The Gaiters fought back in the second half scoring a touchdown and two safeties. The major came with 1:18 left in the game when pivot Joel Lefebvre found Cam McKellar 18 yards down field.

Lefebvre completed 22 of 38 passes for 219 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Gaiters' record falls to 0-2, while the Stingers are now 2-0.
