Carabins cruise to victory over grid Stingers

The Concordia Stingers suffered a difficult 36-1 loss to the No. 6-ranked Montreal Carabins in Quebec university football action at Concordia stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Stingers came out strong with linebacker Max Caron nabbing an interception 1:43 into the game, but from there the momentum slowly ebbed away.

The Carabins had a 19-1 lead at halftime on two touchdowns, a field goal and a safety. The majors came on an eight-yard run by quarterback Alexandre Nadeau-Piuze at 9:30 of the first quarter and a 55-yard reception by Alexandre Fortier-Labonté with 33 seconds left in the half.

In the second half, Nadeau-Piuze continued to inflict damage. He found Vincent Pelletier-Bouchard for a 13-yard TD strike at 11:36 of the third quarter.

As the game wound down, the Carabins hammered Concordia kicker Keegan Treloar in the Stingers’ end zone. His fumble was recovered by Montreal’s William St-Laurent for a touchdown.

Overall, Montreal rolled up 21 first downs and 365 yards of offence.

Concordia had 17 first downs and 263 yards on the attack. Stinger quarterback completed 22 of 41 passes for 263 yards net. His favorite target was rookie slot back Jamal Henry who caught nine passes for 116 yards.

The Stingers’ win-loss record is now 3-5. They travel across the city to play the 0-8 McGill Redmen at Molson Stadium next Saturday at 1 p.m.
