Caron, Stingers snag Shaughnessy Cup victory

Concordia linebacker Max Caron hauled in two interceptions, including a 96-yard return for a touchdown, to lead the Stingers to a 58-30 victory over the McGill Redmen in the annual Shaughnessy Cup game at Molson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was the ninth straight victory for the Stingers in the annual showdown.

In 1969 the Shaughnessy Cup – named for the legendary Frank (Shag) Shaughnessy – was first awarded for local football supremacy between McGill University and Loyola College. Since 1975, the cup has been fought for in a match between McGill and Concordia University.

Caron, a second-year player originally from Kingston, Ont., added six solo tackles and two assists to his impressive performance. He finishes the regular season with 78.5 total tackles, which is a new conference record for tackles in a single season.

Stinger quarterback Reid Quest also had an exceptional day. He completed 23 of 31 passes for 356 yards and five touchdowns. He threw no interceptions. He orchestrated an offence that rolled up 606 yards and 30 first downs.

Some of Quest’s favorite targets were: Kris Bastien with four receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown, Sanchez Deschamps with four catches for 56 yards and a TD and Matt Scheurwater who caught four passes for 46 yards and a major.

The Concordia running backs were also catching balls. Mike Donnelly caught a pass and took it 65 yards to paydirt, while Edem Nyamadi caught two balls for 16 yards and a touchdown.

The running game was rolling as well. Nyamadi carried the ball six times for 113 yards, while Raul Thompson had five carries for 62 yards and a TD.

The Stingers finish the regular season in fourth place with a 4-5 win-loss record. They will meet the division-leading Laval Rouge et Or (8-1) in a Quebec conference semifinal next Saturday at 1 p.m.
