4 Stingers on football conference honor roll

Four members of the Concordia Stingers football program were named to the RSEQ all-star team as selected by the conference’s head coaches and announced earlier today.

Two athletes – linebacker Max Caron and return specialist Kris Robertson – were unanimous selections.

Caron, a second-year athlete from Kingston, Ont., makes his first appearance on the elite squad. He established three Quebec conference records in 2011. He set new marks for interceptions returned for touchdowns in a season with three and set the career record with four interceptions. (He had one in 2010 in his first ever CIS game). He is also the all-time single season tackling leader with 78.5.

He has made an impact on the national statistics as well, leading the country in tackles (78.5), average tackles per game (8.7) and interceptions returned for touchdowns (3). He is also second in the CIS for interceptions with five this season.

A Pickering, Ont. native, Robertson returned 57 punts for 597 yards this season including a pair of touchdowns, while adding another 440 yards on 18 kickoffs.

The third-year man, who also plays defensive halfback, had two interceptions that he returned for a total of 47 yards. He has 1084 all-purpose yards this season.

Fifth-year offensive guard Anthony Barrette makes his second appearance on the honor roll. The Verdun, Que. native was also an all-star and a second team CIS all-Canadian in 2010. In the CFL draft last May, he was selected by the Montreal Alouettes, 16th overall in the second round.

Finally, second-year inside receiver Kris Bastien of St. Lambert, Que. is an all-star. He caught 38 passes for 656 yards and five touchdowns. He is the third-leading receiver in Quebec for receiving yards.

The RSEQ will hold a press conference in Montreal this Monday to announce its major award winners.
