The Stingers enjoyed a strong showing at the annual Concordia Reebok Women's Basketball Tournament before bowing out 71-60 to the No. 7-ranked Alberta Pandas in the championship game on Dec. 31.
Kaylah Barrett led all scorers in the final game with 23 points for the Stingers. She also hauled in seven rebounds. Anne-Marie Prophete and Natasha Raposo chipped in with 11 points each.
Sally Hillier scored 21 points and added seven rebounds to lead Alberta. The Pandas defeated the Western Mustangs and the Memorial Sea-Hawks in the opening rounds of the three-day, eight-team tournament.
Concordia defeated the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 77-56 in the first round of the competition. In the semifinals, the Stingers upset the No. 4-ranked Carleton Ravens 67-58. Raposo, a rookie guard, stepped up in the big game, scoring 18 points and adding four rebounds.
In the third-place game, Carleton defeated Memorial 81-51. The McGill Martlets won the consolation final with a 74-69 victory over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack. With a 70-56 win over Western, UNB finished in seventh place.
Jill Verhesen of the Pandas was the tournament MVP. The all-star team included: Kaylah Barrett (Concordia), Anneka Bakker (Alberta), Alyson Bush (Carleton), Megan Robinson and (Memorial).
