Als star to kick off Homecoming

Sylvain Girard, a star wide receiver with the Montreal Alouettes, will join Concordia alumni and fans to help kick off Homecoming festivities at the university's football home-opener on Saturday afternoon.

Girard, who suited up for the Stingers from 1995 to '98, will sign autographs for alumni and fans from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. He will then join a party of dignitaries at centre field for the ceremonial kickoff.

The popular star is now in his seventh season with the Alouettes. In his first six years he has 93 receptions for 1712 yards and nine touchdowns to his credit. He also has a Grey Cup ring from his team's 2002 CFL championship season.

Girard will lead Stingers' fans in the cheering as Concordia meets the Bishop's Gaiters. Kickoff is 1 p.m. Concordia goes into the game with a 1-0 win-loss record, having defeated the McGill Redmen 33-25 on Sept. 1. The Gaiters come to N.D.G. with one loss on their record. They lost their home-opener 38-19 to the Sherbrooke Vert et Or on Sept. 5.
