Max Caron named MVP at football banquet

Linebacker Max Caron was honored as the 2011 season's outstanding player when the Concordia Stingers gathered at their annual football team banquet on Saturday night.

A second-year player originally from Kingston, Ont., he was also Concordia’s defensive MVP.

The Political Science student established three Quebec conference records in 2011. He set new marks for interceptions returned for touchdowns in a season with three and set the career record with four interceptions. (He had one in 2010 in his first ever CIS game). He is also the all-time single season tackling leader with 78.5.

He made an impact on the national statistics as well, leading the country in tackles (78.5), average tackles per game (8.7) and interceptions returned for touchdowns (3).

Last November, Caron was awarded the Presidents’ Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in Canadian Interuniversity Sport football. 

Other defensive awards went to second-year tackle Quinn Smith as the outstanding lineman and cornerback Kadeem Vaillancourt who was named the top rookie.

On offence, first-year quarterback Reid Quest was named MVP. The Regina native took over the starting QB duties a few games into the season. He completed 118 of 192 passes for 1548 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Fifth-year tackle Anthony Barrette was named the outstanding offensive lineman, while slotback Jamal Henry was the top rookie on offence.

All-Canadian returner Kris Robertson, a third-year man, was named the special teams player of the year.

Fifth-year halfback Paul Spencer was recognized as the most dedicated player.

Linebacker Marc-André Lewis, a third-year Finance major, was honored for his academic work.

Fifth-year fullback Brendan Urness was given the Ricky Zieba Trophy, presented annually for heart, leadership and teamwork.

A new award was initiated at the dinner. The Larry Cullen Jr. Memorial Award for team-first attitude was presented to fifth-year defensive back Kyle Smith.
