The Concordia Stingers women’s basketball team will meet the top-ranked Regina Cougars on Friday at 8 p.m. (CST) in Saskatoon at the 2012 CIS West regional qualifying tournament.
The Stingers and Cougars will join the host Saskatchewan Huskies and Brock Badgers in a four-team playoff on Friday and Saturday. The winner of the regional tournament will earn a berth at the CIS national championships March 17-19 in Calgary.
The seeding is as follows: No. 1 Regina (Canada West finalists), No. 2 Saskatchewan (Canada West bronze medallists), No. 3 Brock (OUA bronze medallists) and No. 4 Concordia (RSEQ finalists).
Regina was ranked No. 1 in the CIS for all 14 weeks of the women’s basketball Top 10 rankings, but lost 78-59 to the UBC Thunderbirds in the Canada West championship game.
The Stingers and the Cougars met in the preseason Oct. 14-15. Regina won both contests by scores of 90-63 and 84-61.
Friday’s first-round matchups are Brock vs. host Saskatchewan at 6:15 p.m. (CST), and Concordia vs. Regina at 8 p.m. (CST). The sudden-death gold-medal game is scheduled for 7 p.m. (CST) on Saturday.
