Stingers lose momentum on gridiron in Lennoxville

Despite a quick start that saw Concordia pull ahead by 11 points in the first quarter, the Stingers lost 38-30 to the Bishop’s Gaiters in Lennoxville, Que. on Saturday afternoon.

At the end of the first quarter, Concordia was ahead 18-7 on touchdowns by receiver Matt Scheurwater and running back Raul Thompson, and a 20-yard field goal by Keegan Treloar.

The Gaiters slammed the door shut on the Stingers’ offence in the second quarter while putting 12 points on the scoreboard and heading into the locker room with a 19-18 lead at halftime.

Bishop’s continued to roll when they returned to the field had a 35-18 advantage early in the fourth quarter. Concordia fought back, picking up 12 straight points. A 52-yard touchdown run from Thompson, a 42-yard field goal from Treloar and a safety made the score 35-30 with two minutes to go.

The dying minutes were intense, but it was the Gaiters who won the battle, wrapping up with one more score – a 30-yard field goal with 14 seconds to play.

Overall, the Stingers collected 20 first downs and 345 yards of offence. Quarterback Reid Quest had another solid game. He completed 20 of 42 passes for 263 yards and a touchdown. Thompson’s play was also a bright spot. He had two touchdowns and 66 yards rushing on three carries.

Bishop’s rolled up 31 first downs and 474 yards of offence. The dominant player was Matthew Burke who carried the ball 30 times for 239 yards a touchdown.

The Stingers’ win-loss record falls to 2-2. They are back in action this Friday when they host the Montréal Carabins in the Homecoming game Friday night at 7 p.m.
