The record-setting kicking of William Dion helped the Sherbrooke Vert & Or defeat the Concordia Stingers 48-6 in the 26th annual Shrine Bowl at Concordia Stadium in Montreal this afternoon.
Dion connected on four field goals (30, 15, 12 and 11 yards) to break the CIS record for most field goals in a career. His first field goal of the game came at 12:44 of the first quarter. It broke the record of 72 held by Aaron Ifield of Calgary.
Concordia kicker Keegan Treloar chipped in with two field goals of his own from 20 and 37 yards. They proved to be the Stingers’ only points of the game.
Overall, the teams were fairly even on the stats sheet – expect for two areas. Penalties and turnovers were Concordia’s downfall.
The Stingers took 11 penalties for 105 yards, one of which negated a touchdown. The Vert & Or had two penalties for 20 yards.
Concordia turned over the ball nine times – four fumbles, two interceptions and three times on downs. Sherbrooke had two turnovers.
The Stingers had 19 first downs and a total offence of 338 yards. The Vert & Or rolled up 22 first downs and 363 yards of offence.
Concordia quarterback Reid Quest completed 17 0f 29 passes for 184 yards. Sherbrooke’s Jérémi Roch went 22 of 31 for 230 yards.
As is tradition at the Shrine Bowl, there were several trophy presentations after the game. The John Gilday Memorial Trophies presented to the outstanding offensive players were Concordia receiver Jamal Henry and Sherbrooke quarterback Jérémi Roch.
The Grant H. Peterson trophies for the outstanding defensive players went to linebacker Max Caron for the Stingers and Vert & Or linebacker Nicolas Boulay.
The Montreal Alouettes Alumni Association honors the outstanding defensive linemen at every Shrine Bowl game. A presentation is made in honor of Ted Elsby, a perennial all-star for 13 seasons with the Alouettes and a dedicated Shriner. This year, the awards went to Concordia tackle Quinn Smith and Sherbrooke’s Marc-Antoine Racicot.
The Stingers’ win-loss record falls to 2-4. Concordia travels across town to McGill to play the Redmen in the Shaughnessy Cup next Saturday at 1 p.m.
