All-Canadian forward Kaylah Barrett scored 16 points to lead the 10th-ranked Concordia Stingers to a 71-66 victory over the McGill Martlets and to keep her team on top of the RSEQ women’s basketball standings.
Also chipping in for the Stingers were rookie forwards Marilyse Roy-Viau with 14 points and five rebounds and Richelle Gregoire with 13 points.
With tonight’s victory, the Stingers have an 8-3 win-loss record. The Martlets also have an 8-3 record and a piece of first place.
“This was a big win for us,” said Concordia assistant coach Rastko Popovic. “We executed very well offensively throughout the first three quarters. Things got a little bit tight in the fourth quarter. We made some key shots and all of our free throws in the last few minutes.”
Concordia led 42-34 at halftime. The Stingers stretched their lead to 61-45 after three quarters.
Five games remain in regular season conference play.
“Every game from now on is a playoff-type game,” said Popovic.”
Concordia will host the Laval Rouge et Or tomorrow at 6 p.m. The visitors come to Montreal with a 4-6 record.
