Receiver Kris Bastien shines in tough loss

Stinger slotback Kris Bastien caught six passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns but it wasn’t enough to lift his Concordia Stingers to victory against the McGill Redmen at Molson Stadium on Friday night.

The Redmen defeated the Stingers 32-19 to win the 45th annual Shaughnessy Cup which is symbolic of university football supremacy between the schools.

The result snapped McGill's 11-year, 15-game losing streak to the Stingers, dating back to 2002.

Bastien still has a streak of his own going. He has scored at least one touchdown against the Redmen in each of the last four meetings between the teams, dating back to Oct. 8, 2011. His totals for the four games are 20 catches for 298 yards and six touchdowns.

Concordia and McGill were evenly matched in the stats columns with the Stingers rolling up 23 first downs and 386 yards of offence. The Redmen picked up 24 first downs and 402 yards of offence. Time of possession was exactly 30 minutes for each team.

Concordia veteran quarterback Reid Quest posted good numbers. He completed 27 of 39 passes for 312 yards, one interception and one touchdown.

Defensively, linebacker Max Caron was the standout for the Stingers with 6.5 tackles, including two sacks. He also forced a fumble.

Concordia and McGill meet again on Saturday, Sept. 28 for the annual Shrine Bowl Game at Concordia Stadium. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
