2 Stingers named top CFL prospects by scouts

Concordia Stinger linebacker Max Caron and slotback Kris Bastien were featured prominently when the Canadian Football League Scouting Bureau published its September Top 15 ranking of prospects eligible for the 2014 draft.

Caron, a fourth-year student originally from Kingston, Ont., is the No. 7-rated player. Only one linebacker prospect rates above him – sixth-ranked Beau Landry from Western University.

Caron was the 2011 Presidents’ Trophy recipient as the top defensive player in CIS. He owns several RSEQ records, including most tackles in a season with 78.5 in 2011 and most interceptions returned for touchowns with three, also in 2011.

After two games this season, Caron has six solo tackles, three assists and two sacks.

The team captain, who played at Frontenac Secondary School and with the Okanagan Sun of the CJFL before coming to Montreal, checks in at six foot two and 215 pounds.

Bastien, a fourth-year player from St. Lambert, Que., is the 11th-ranked prospect on the list. The only receiver rated higher is Devon Bailey of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men who holds down the No. 2 spot on the list.

Bastien struggled with injuries in 2012 but has come back strong in 2013. After two games, he has 10 receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

The six-foot-three, 205-pound inside receiver comes out of the Champlain College, St. Lambert, football program.

The next CFL Scouting Bureau list will be published following the CIS season.

The CFL’s Scouting Bureau is comprised of scouts, player personnel directors and general managers from the league’s nine teams.
