Despite the heartbreaking 53-52 overtime loss to the McGill Redmen in the 27th annual Shrine Bowl at Concordia Stadium on Saturday afternoon, there were several exceptional individual efforts in the game.
Kicker Keegan Treloar made a 50-yard field goal early in the first quarter which is the longest in the CIS this year.
He was good on all three of his field goal attempts, connecting from 44, 48 and 50 yards out. He was also five for five on converts giving him 14 points on the day.
The 50-yarder set a Concordia record. The previous mark of 48 yards was held by Rene Paredes who is now playing in the CFL with the Calgary Stampeders. (Sept. 25, 2010 vs. Bishop's).
Treloar earned two spots in the RSEQ record book. Fifty yards is the third longest field goal on record. His 48-yarder also gives him the seventh longest FG on record.
The Brandon, Man. native has connected on nine of 10 FGs this season, giving him a 90 per cent success rate which is tops in the RSEQ and second best in CIS.
Second-year safety/linebacker Mikaël Charland recorded 14 solo tackles, two assists, a forced fumble and an interception. With a total of 15 tackles the Gatineau, Que. native moves into the No. 3 spot in the RSEQ record book for most tackles in a single game.
Charland is the leading tackler in the RSEQ with 35 tackles - 31 solos and eight assists.
Quinn Smith, a fourth-year player from Scarborough, Ont., won the Ted Elsby Trophy presented annually to the top defensive lineman in the Shrine Bowl by the Alouettes Alumni Association. He had three solo tackles, including one for a loss.
He played both ways in the game, helping the Stingers’ injury-riddled offensive line by suiting up at guard as well.
This is the third straight Elsby award for Smith. Although a couple of players have earned the honour two times in the 27-year history of the game, Smith is the only one with a three-peat.
Other trophies presented at the end of the game were:
Offensive MVPs – quarterback François Dessureault, Concordia; Pierre-Luc Dussault, McGill.
Defensive MVPs – safety/linebacker Mikaël Charland, Concordia; lineman Carl Laverdiere, McGill.
McGill’s Kadeem Lewis was also presented an Elsby award for his work on the Redmen’s defensive line.
The Stingers’ win-loss record now stands at 0-5. They travel to Quebec City to play the Laval Rouge et Or on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
