Max Caron, teammates on CFL radar

Linebacker Max Caron heads a list of four Concordia Stingers football players who have drawn the attention of the CFL’s top brass.

Caron, who won the 2011 Presidents’ Trophy as the outstanding defensive player in the CIS, is rated No. 10 by the CFL’s Scouting Bureau which released its list of the Top 15 prospects for the 2014 draft at noon today.

The bureau is comprised of CFL scouts, player personnel directors and general managers from the league’s nine teams.

All 15 players who were on the list a year ago were selected in the 2013 draft, including seven in the first round. The draft is traditionally held in early May.

Before the draft rolls around, the CFL will invite approximately 50 of the top prospects to an evaluation camp March 21-23 in Toronto. Invitations to the CFL Combine went out last Friday.

Joining Caron in Toronto will be fourth-year slotback Kris Bastien, a two-time RSEQ all-star who was rated No. 11 in the CFL Scouting Bureau’s September ranking.

Versatile Quinn Smith, who checks in at six foot two, 305 pounds, will be evaluated with the offensive linemen. The Scarborough, Ont. native just wrapped up his fourth year with the Stingers.

Senior quarterback Reid Quest also received an invite and will attend the prestigious camp. The pivot made a name for himself with the Regina Thunder in the Canadian junior ranks before joining the Stingers in 2011.
