Quinn Smith named football MVP

Quinn Smith, a fourth-year lineman who played on both sides of the ball, was named the MVP of the 2013 Concordia Stingers football team at an award banquet on Saturday night.

The six-foot-two, 300-pound native of Scarborough, Ont., started the season as a defensive tackle but ended up pulling double duty when injuries left the Stingers shorted-handed on the offensive line.

On defence, he collected 11 solo tackles, six assists and five tackles for losses, including a sack, in seven games.

Smith won the Ted Elsby Trophy as the outstanding defensive lineman in the Shrine Bowl on Sept. 28. It was the third straight year he was honoured with the award presented by the Montreal Alouettes Alumni.

Other award winners were:

LB Mike Charland, outstanding player on defence

SB Kris Bastien, outstanding player on offence

DT Quinn Smith, top defensive lineman

OT Roman Grozman, top offensive lineman

CB Neil Riley-Grant, rookie of the year on defence

RB Jamall Hyman, rookie of the year on offence

S Jason Azzoparde, top academic Stinger

DE Eric Noivo, most dedicated Stinger

DE Andrew Barlett, Ricky Zieba Award

C Fred Landry-Simard, Larry Cullen Award

The Stingers also honoured three graduating seniors: linebacker Alex Lemire, slotback Mike Harrington and linebacker Max Caron.
