Stingers notch preseason win

The Concordia Stingers defeated the Queen's Golden Gaels 24-7 in a preseason football contest held yesterday at Richardson Stadium in Kingston, Ont.

Second-year quarterback Rob Mackay connected with rookie running back Patrick Okpalugo for the only Stinger touchdown strike of the day.

All-Canadian kicker Warren Kean accounted for most of the Stingers' scoring, connecting on five field goals, one convert and a single.

Concordia rolled up 330 yards of offence - 102 yards rushing and 237 in passing. Veteran quarterback and 2005 Hec Crighton nominee Scott Syvret split time with Mackay. Syvret completed 13 of 19 passes for 148 yards. Mackay was three of 14 for 89 yards, one TD and one interception. Their favorite targets were Devendra Maharajh with three catches for 60 yards and Marc Champagnie with two receptions for 57 yards.

The top rusher in the game for the Stingers was Andrew Hamilton. He picked up 26 yards on two carries.

On defence, Concordia held Queen's to 240 yards – 65 rushing and 185 in the air. The Stingers collected five interceptions from five different defenders – Corey Greenwood, Andrew Nagy, Bryan Charleau, Moe Sidibe and Nathan Agadzi. The leading tacklers were defensive end William Miller with six and all-Canadian halfback Sammy Okpro with five.

Head coach Gerry McGrath took 71 players to Kingston and spread the playing time around. His Stingers return to camp tomorrow to begin serious preparations for the Quebec conference season and the home opener on Friday, Sept. 8 versus the Sherbrooke Vert et Or.
