Kean, Donovan sting Sherbrooke

CIS All-Canadian kicker Warren Kean connected on three field goals, including the game-winning score, to lead the Concordia Stingers to an 18-15 win over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or at Concordia Stadium on Friday night.

A Homecoming crowd of 4009 was on hand as Kean made good on a 23-yard field with 12:52 left in the game, breaking a 15-15 tie. Kean also made field goals of 20 and 30 yards in the first quarter.

Concordia's other points came on a 20-yard touchdown reception by Andrew Hamilton at 2:46 of the first quarter and a safety in the third quarter.

Linebacker Patrick Donovan was in fine form, proving once again that he is the best defensive player in CIS football. The 2005 President's Trophy winner and all-Canadian had 9.5 tackles and a game-saving interception as the clock ran out in the fourth quarter. Afterward, he was awarded the Homecoming Cup as the MVP of the game.

For Sherbrooke, receiver Alexandre Poirier caught three passes for 51 yards, including a touchdown reception 22 seconds into the second quarter. Rookie quarterback Jean-Philippe Shoiry struggled in his first CIS game, completing 12 of 32 passes for 218 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions.

Concordia (1-0) visits the No. 3-ranked Montréal Carabins (0-0) next Saturday.
