Early in the third quarter, all-Canadian halfback Sammy Okpro delivered a knockout punch to the No. 4-ranked team in the CIS when he snagged an interception and ran it back 42 yards for a touchdown .
The major score gave unranked Concordia a 10-0 lead and the momentum which carried the Stingers to a 25-11 victory over the Montreal Carabins at CEPSUM on Saturday afternoon.
Running back Andrew Hamilton picked up the charge at 13:40 of the third quarter when he ran 53 yards for a touchdown. He had six carries for 102 yards on the day.
The two majors and a couple of Warren Kean field goals (28 yards and 37 yards) were enough to take down the Carabins.
Concordia rolled up 241 yards of offence, while Montreal managed just 282 yards in what was a monumental defensive battle.
Patrick Donovan, the linebacker who was named the outstanding defensive player in the CIS in 2005, led all tacklers in the game with four solo tackles and six assists.
But the game really belonged to Okpro and the defensive backfield. Okpro had 5.5 tackles and a breakup to go along with his interception. All-Canadian cornerback Moe Sidibe, halfback Junior Bishop and corner Sylvester Sarfo all had interceptions.
It marked the second straight game that the Concordia defence hauled in four interceptions.
The Stingers are now 2-0. They host the St. Francis Xavier X-Men on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m.
