Grid Stingers perfect after three games

Slotback Nick Scissons caught three touchdown passes in the first half to lead the No. 7-ranked Concordia Stingers to a 37-0 victory over the St. Francis Xavier X-Men at Concordia Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Scissons, a fourth-year History major from Ottawa, had five receptions for 101 yards on the day. His first touchdown was set up by halfback Sammy Okpro who recovered an X-Men fumble 23 seconds into the game. At 1:22 quarterback Scott Syvret found Scissons with a seven-yard TD pass.

With Rob Mackay at quarterback in the second quarter, Scissons caught a 26-yard TD pass at 6:49 and a six-yard strike at 10:09.

The Stingers had a 22-0 lead at the half.

Overall Concordia had 328 yards of offence (68 rushing and 260 passing), while St. Francis Xavier rolled up 258 yards of offence (30 rushing and 228 passing). The Stingers' stingy defence was impressive throughout the game, forcing six turnovers.

On defence, all-Canadian halfback Okpro had another outstanding performance. He led all tacklers in the game with eight solo tackles and an assist. He also had the first quarter fumble recovery

Fifth-year safety Junior Bishop had a strong outing with two interceptions (eight yards and 46 yards). He now has three on the year.

The Stingers improve their record to 3-0, while the X-Men fall to 2-1. Next week Concordia is in Lennoxville, Que. on Saturday to face the Bishop's Gaiters.
